When establishing utility services at your new residence, you will probably need water/sewer, electric, natural gas, and waste sanitation services. But this depends on your place of residence. If you are moving to a rental apartment, some or all of the utilities may be included in your lease. There also may be different requirements if you move into an environmentally-friendly Smart Home community. Before setting up service, it is always a good idea to check with your realtor, landlord, or leasing agent.

We suggest at least a week or two before you are scheduled to move that you contact companies to either transfer or change service. Most utility companies don’t need much notice for transferring service. However, there could always be potential delays that could leave you scrambling around.

To avoid any stress, don’t wait until the last minute. Some utility companies have specific hours to accept applications and most will not start new service on a weekend or holiday. Additionally, if this is your first time on your own or you are setting up a new account, they may require an application with a deposit. To help alleviate some of the confusion as to who to contact, how to contact them, and what you will need, we’ve included basic information about the various companies available to residents in Conyers.

Water and Sewer

All water is serviced through the Rockdale County Water and Sewer Authority. Residents must provide proof of ownership or a signed lease, picture identification, and an application for new or transferred services. There is a deposit that is based on your meter size and usage plus a non-refundable processing fee of $50. Deposits are refunded back to the account in 24 months with good payment history or else applied to the final bill. At least one business day is needed to establish an account prior to service.

Natural Gas

Georgia’s natural gas utility companies are deregulated under the Natural Gas Competition and Deregulation Act of 1997. Distribution comes from Atlanta Gas Light Company and is administered through a natural gas marketing company. So you have a choice as to which company you want to administer the service for your residence. The prices charged by marketers are market-based, but rates for the distribution service are still regulated by the Public Service Commission.

When choosing a marketer, you can select from a fixed rate plan or a variable rate plan. To lock in a current rate, customers choose a fixed rate plan for a period (usually 6 to 12 months) under contract. If a resident would prefer not to be in a contract, he or she may select a variable rate that is based on the market-based rate that changes frequently throughout the year.

The list of certified marketers to choose from may change periodically and can be found at http://www.psc.state.ga.us/gas/certified_marketers.asp and are listed below. Most marketing companies require an application and may also require a deposit based on credit history. There are also limitations as to how frequently you can change companies and the period of time you must remain at one company before you can change to another one.
