Change Your Address

A few weeks before your actual moving date, you should contact the post office to arrange to forward your mail. The good news is that arrangements can be made online with the post office at www.usps.com that includes a small fee to validate identity. Or you can visit your post office and obtain the forwarding form there. Then once you complete the form, either drop it by the post office or mail it to them. They will send you a verification notice before your scheduled date.

Forwarding your mail is only a temporary measure for a certain period of time. You will still need to contact the people and institutions that you get mail from to provide them with your new address.  This includes your banks, your credit card companies, any subscriptions you have such as from magazines, catalog companies and companies where you get regular shipments, friends, and family.

It is better to have mail sent directly to your new address instead of waiting for it to be forwarded. A tip is to look at who you are getting mail from now and contact the sender about the change of address and date to start using the new address. Most bills and statements have an area for making an address change notification.

If you are moving here and don’t have a permanent address yet, it can be a trickier process for handling mail because you may have to hold your mail first until you can arrange to get it forwarded to the new address. The post office accepts requests to hold mail up to 30 days before the start date. But remember, the hold is not based on an individual; instead the hold is placed on all the mail at that address.

The post office can hold mail from 3 to 30 days. If you are planning to stay at a temporary address for a longer time period, you can make special arrangements to get a weekly batch of mail forwarded to your temporary address.

Once you make the move, it will be helpful to visit the post office so you know where it is. Conyers has two post office locations:
